the largest snow sculpture ever created

Rising out of the snow, this magnificent sculpture is the centrepiece of the Ice And Snow Festival, held annually in the northeastern city of Harbin, China.

Called Romantic Feelings, it is a staggering 115ft high and 656ft long - the largest snow sculpture ever created.

It was made by joining together 15ft square blocks of natural ice and snow, taken from the nearby Songhua River, which have been compressed to withstand blows from hatchets, saws and shovels.

Romantic Feelings is a staggering 115ft high and 656ft long. The ice maiden: China unveils largest snow sculpture ever created

600 sculptors from 40 countries have used 120,000 cubic feet of snow and ice to create the Olympic themed landscape - a vista of Russian churches, French cathedrals, Chinese palaces and, of course, an ice Acropolis.

There is even a version of Stonehenge to celebrate the London Olympics in 2012.

At night they are dazzlingly lit by coloured lasers and lanterns, creating a multicoloured translucent display.

The amazing spectacle is expected to attract an estimated 800,000 tourists - 90 per cent of them Chinese.

Since the festival's launch in 1985, it has been the city's biggest individual means of income.

Workers are desperately having to shore up these stunning ice sculptures in Harbin, China, as rising temperatures threaten to melt them

Harbin, which is in Heilongjiang Province on the edge of Siberia, is one of China's coldest places and winter temperatures can drop to -35C, which you might think cold enough for preserving snow sculptures.

However, organisers are increasingly concerned about the effects of global warming on this year's sculptures.

Many of them are melting rapidly in the midday sun and emergency repairs have already been carried out to stop them collapsing completely.

The festival traditionally runs from mid-December to early February, but it is feared that the rising temperatures - last winter it reached a record 6.6C - could see it significantly shortened.

The new designs of the C2 taser, which delivers a 50,000 volt shock if it is fired

It is the new must-have accessory - an MP3 player which also holds a taser with a 50,000 volt charge that will lay any attacker flat on the floor.

The creation by an American stun gun manufacturer, called the Taser Music Player Holster, is already being dubbed the iTaser.

An MP3 player is handily hidden in the casing so that people can nonchalantly listen to music but still have a 50,000 volt charge to hand should they run into trouble.

The holster comes in red, pink and even leopard print and contains an MP3 player

The taser, which is being unveiled at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week, also comes in "fashion" pink, "red hot" red and leopard print designs in a bid to make it more fashionable.

Arizona-based Taser International is hoping its latest product will be a particular hit with women who would not usually consider buying a taser because it is too ugly.

Company spokesman Peter Holran said: "Women want whatever they're carrying - from a lipstick case to their eyeglass case to their Taser - to look nice and be something they won't mind if it falls out of their purse."

The company produced the "iTaser" because it wanted to make it easier for people to integrate it into their lives.

Mr Holran said: "If people buy the C2 Taser and leave it in a drawer or under a shelf, it does them no good when they need it."

The iTaser gun: Designer weapon delivers 50,000 volt shock... and doubles as an MP3 player

Ten police forces in England and Wales use Tasers and forces from Devon and Cornwall to north Wales and Northumbria have issued the stun guns to previously unarmed officers.

They generate a 50,000 volt charge which shoots through two small probes and causes instant neuro-muscular incapacitation, forcing the recipient to crumple to the floor.

Although illegal for personal use in the UK, they are available to buy in the US with a licence and Taser International says they are even being sold in mobile phone shops.

The company shipped about 7,000 of the C2 model during the third quarter of 2007, according to US reports.

But their private use is controversial, and Amnesty International claims they have been linked with more than 70 deaths in America.

New Species Found in Remote Asian Sea?

A square jaw and edgy brow give a distinctive profile to this boxfish, one of many exotic marine creatures recently found by scientists exploring Southeast Asia's Celebes Sea.

The international team of researchers recently returned from two weeks in the Celebes, a little-explored sea between Malaysia and the Philippines that is home to one of the world's deepest ocean basins.

The Celebes's relative isolation and chilly depths make it one of the world's most richly diverse marine habitats, likely hosting species that have lived in seclusion for millions of years, expedition leader Larry Madin told the Associated Press.

"This is probably the center where many of the species evolved and spread to other parts of the ocean, so it's going back to the source in many ways," said Madin, who is director of research at the Massachusetts-based Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

The team found several species that are likely new to science, Madin added, including a swimming sea cucumber, a black jellyfish, and a spiny orange worm with tentacles growing out its head.
Species
A 0.2-inch-long (0.5-centimeter-long) larval squid is seen through a microscope's lens in this handout image released October 16, 2007, by WHOI.

The young squid was caught within 328 feet (100 meters) of the surface of the Celebes Sea, an unusual basin that lies between the southern Philippines and Malaysia. Researchers exploring the region recently caught a variety of marine animals, some of which might be new to science.

The largely unexplored area boasts especially deep water surrounded by shallower ocean, offering researchers hope of finding new creatures that might have developed in isolation in the sea's depths.
Species0
A red medusa jellyfish of the genus Atolla is seen swimming in this handout photograph from WHOI's expedition to the Celebes Sea in October 2007.

The deep-sea jellyfish is among a handful of creatures—some of which might be new species—recently caught by the Filipino-U.S. team in the waters south of the Philippines' Sulu Archipelago.

The animal's deep red hue is actually common among these jellyfish, according to the Woods Hole team. Although it is not visible in the ocean's dark depths, the color masks any bioluminescence given off by prey trapped inside the jellies' guts.
Species1
A translucent jellyfish of the family Aequorea swims near the surface of Southeast Asia's Celebes Sea in October 2007.

The delicate jelly was among the hundred specimens recently collected by scientists studying the unexplored waters between Malaysia and the Philippines.

The research, conducted as part of the Inner Space Speciation Project, aims to document marine life in the remote sea, which plunges to depths of 16,500 feet (5,000 meters).
Species2
An image of a sample dish full of tiny marine life reveals several jellyfish, a lantern fish, a snipe eel, two orange shrimp, and a jellyfish-like creature called a pyrosome. WHOI released this and other images on October 16, 2007, during a media announcement.

Some of these animals might be new to science, according to WHOI's Filipino-U.S. project, which scoured the deep waters of the Celebes Sea near the Philippines earlier this month.

Team leaders said it will take weeks of follow-up research to determine whether any of the animals are actually new species. The researchers expect to release a full report in early November.

Life Observations

I see life in two ways. Reality is that which happens regardless of what you think. What you think may or may not be reality. Understanding that reality causes things to happen, try not to think too much.

Rather than attempt a profound dialog that readers may relate to, following is a list of quotations, in no particular order, some famous, that I see as the reality we live with.

Watch Your;

Thoughts, they become Words
Words, they become Actions
Actions, they become Habits
Habits, they become Character
Character, it becomes your destiny.

These are Darwinian times in our industry, the failure to change is the failure to survive.
Change is the law. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.

For fear of failure, he did nothing.

Fortune favors the bold.
I struggled and rose again.

Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

Excuses are bridges to nowhere. People who use excuses are monuments to nothing.

The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again.

Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.

Confidence comes not from always being right but from not fearing to be wrong

There are three kinds of people.
Those who make things happen.
Those who watch things happen.
Those who wonder what happened.

The person who is not hungry or thirsty sees the 1/2 empty cup. The person who is thirsty sees the 1/2 full cup. Let the person get thirsty, so he'll see the 1/2 full cup. You can't sell a half empty cup.

The difficult takes a long time. The impossible takes a little longer

If two people who love each other let a single instant wedge itself between them, it grows, it becomes a month, a year, a century, it becomes too late.

Only choose in marriage a woman who you would choose as a friend if she were a man.

The appetite you get outside, you eat at home.
Emotions felt, logic computed, There is no choice.

You can get everything in life you want, if you will help enough other people get what they want

He who wants to persuade should put his trust, not in the right argument, but in the right word.

For power of sound has always been greater than the power of sense.

There is hardly anybody good for everything, and there is scarcely anybody who is absolutely good for nothing.

It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid, than to open it and remove all doubt.

Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?'

To think is easy, to act is difficult. To act as one thinks is the most difficult of all.

History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon.

The broad mass of people falls victim to a big lie more easily than to a small one.

Beauty is only skin deep, ugliness goes through the bone.

A man's character is determined by the way he treats those who can give him nothing in return.

Men believe what they want to.
I think therefore I am.
Knowledge itself is power.
To err is human.
He who is silent agrees.

Do what you love, love what you do, and deliver more than you promise.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

The right to do something doesn't mean that doing it is right.

There is no defeat except for those who give up.

Some suffer from real misfortunes. Sadly, others only imagine that they do.

Don't mistake kindness for weakness.

He who lives without principles dies without honor.

If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain as he is. If you treat someone as he ought to be, he will become what he ought to be.

It is more important to know where you are going than to get there quickly. Do not mistake activity for achievement.

If a man doesn't know where he's going, it doesn't matter what path he takes.

If you give what you do not need, it isn't giving."

You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it.

The man who rows the boat generally doesn't have time to rock it.

Every man is my equal in that I can learn from him.

Fear less, hope more;
Whine less, breathe more;
Talk less, say more;
Hate less, love more;

And all good things are yours.

Whoever acquires knowledge but does not practice it is as one who ploughs but does not sow.

Lose your dreams and you'll lose your mind.

The difference between fact and fiction? Fiction has to make sense.

The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.

If you never budge, don't expect a push.

The lower people's expectations, the higher you can go.

Ideas are like wandering sons. They show up when you least expect them.

An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows.

Don't spit into the well--you might drink from it later.

No man means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous.

An eye for an eye makes the world blind.

Treat others' as you would have them treat you.

Those who are at war with others at not at peace with themselves.

The blue tit concentrates on his exercise

After a hard day's flying, you might think a blue tit would get more than enough exercise to stay in shape.

But this body-conscious bird appears to have found time to practice some chin-ups.
bluetit
The get-fit blue tit who practises chin-ups between flights

Or maybe it has simply lost confidence in its flying abilities and is hanging to the twig on a wing and a prayer.

Spotted on forestry commission land near Farnborough, Hampshire, this bird displays a stunning agility with its claws wrapped tightly around the wood.

And the strange looking position is in fact a regular part of the blue tits feeding strategy. Grahame Madge of the RSPB explained: "Blue tits are extremely agile and light weight birds and are very acrobatic feeders.

"They often hang upside down on branches to catch insects, and this is a very comfortable position for them to be in."

He added: "Around bird feeders, birds will wait for their turn to eat. There is a definite pecking order."
